Nizhny Novgorod
City and Population
Due to its advantageous location on the Volga River, Nizhny Novgorod developed into our nation's key commerce centre in the 19th century. Today, Nizhny Novgorod has a population of 1.28 million and continues to grow as a key business and culture centre in Russia. It is one of Russia's most traditional and beautiful cities.
Sights
UNESCO recognizes Nizhny on a list of 100 cities of great history and culture. One of Nizhny Novgorod's most famous sons was writer Maxim Gorky, whose name the city bore from 1932 to 1991. His childhood home is preserved as a museum, known as the Kashirin House. Other landmarks include more than 600 unique historic, architectural and cultural monuments in the city.
Football
Two First Division Teams, FC Volga and FC Nizhny Novgorod, are based in Nizhny Novgorod, as well as the women's Futsal team of FC Nizhny Novgorod - the current Russian champion. The 12 football stadiums and more than 100 full-sized pitches offer residents excellent conditions to play throughout the year and to participate in various local tournaments.
Stadium
The FIFA World Cup™ Stadium Nizhny Novgorod will be the premier football stadium in Nizhny, capable of accommodating 44,899 spectators. The new stadium will occupy a prominent position on a 92.2 hectare island in the Volga River. The island is situated north of the city and provides an ideal location for maximising Nizhny's dramatic skyline. At the same time, the new stadium will be a landmark that integrates the city and the water's edge, creating a new visual and spatial relationship between Nizhny and the Volga.
FAN FEST
The picturesque Volga embankment near the ancient Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin will host the Fan Fest. This central location is within walking distance of all the attractions of the city centre.
