Rostov-on-Don
City and Population
Known from the time of Herodotus as a land of warlike Scythians, the endless steppes of the Don River basin eventually became home to the freedom-loving Cossacks. The flamboyant Cossack culture is still prevalent in Rostov-on-Don, a modern city of one million inhabitants overlooking the beautiful Don River. Rostov-on-Done is a key transport and culture hub of southern Russia.
Sights
The famous Scythian mounds, home to the dazzling and legendary Scythian gold, will enchant visitors to this most unique of Russian cities. Rostov-on-Don also offers a number of museums and theatres, as well as a vibrant academic environment with 48 higher educational establishments, including 13 universities.
Football
Rostov-on-Don is the hometown of FC Rostov of the Russia Premier League and more than 40 amateur clubs, competing in 10 stadiums with at least 500 seats. In the city project "Football for every neighbourhood" more than 2,800 children and 80 teachers acting as coaches participated in the year 2009.
Stadium
The new FIFA World Cup™ Stadium Rostov-on-Don will be located on the left bank of the beautiful Don River, just opposite the centre of the city on a site of 52 hectares. The site is part of a large recreational area of stunning beauty on the south bank of the river. It is a very popular place for residents of all ages to spend their leisure time. Incorporating the new stadium into this pristine landscape will be done with great care to ensure that the existing trees and lush green areas are not impacted.
FAN FEST
The main city square with the Stella Memorial complex shall serve as Rostov-on-Don's Fan Fest area. It is in the city centre with the Gorky Theatre facing the square and a fantastic fountain with water games in the centre of the square. This exceptional site offers a capacity for at least 20,000 fans.
