Saransk
City and Population
Saransk is the capital of the Republic of Mordovia and located in central European Russia, in the Volga basin at the confluence of the Saranka and Insar Rivers, about 630 kilometres east of Moscow. It currently has a population of more than 300,000 residents.
Sights
Saransk has many historic architectural sites stemming from its early settlement in the 17th century and its position as a marketplace from that era and later on.
Football
FC Mordovia Saransk plays in the First Division as the top representative of Saransk's 71 football clubs. Around 22,000 people play football in the region, with over 2,200 registered boys and girls in sports schools. Saransk is become a centre for women's and girls' football and is an active member of the 'Futsal to schools' project, with more than 3,000 children participating.
Stadium
The government has budgeted and commissioned a new stadium to be completed for the city's millennium celebration in 2012. The new FIFA World Cup™ Stadium Saransk will be located on the east side of the river crossing where the city was founded in the 17th century and will be fully FIFA compliant. The street that will connect the stadium to the city centre crosses the Insar River and serves as the backbone of the city. The new stadium will be the keystone of the new business park linking the two parts of the city and the road connects Saransk with a future high-tech business development on the east banks of the Insar. The stadium represents the highlight of this development.
FAN FEST
The Sovetskaya Square in front of the government building in the centre of Saransk is proposed to host the main Fan Fest. This location offers a beautiful view of the city park as well as the main sports complex of the city. Capacity for the site is at least 23,000 fans.
