Yekaterinburg

City and Population

Uniquely located on the geographical borderline of Europe and Asia, and at the foot of the Ural Mountains, Yekaterinburg has a population of 1.33 million inhabitants and is surrounded by forests, mainly taiga, and small lakes. With a foundation that dates back to 1723, the city is now Russia's fifth largest thanks to its world-class infrastructure, including an efficient metro system and an excellent airport. With its 16 state-owned universities and educational academies, as well as a number of private higher education institutions, Yekaterinburg is considered the leading educational and scientific centre of the Urals. The city is also one of Russia's most well known centres of the arts.

Sights

More than 30 museums, various theatres and theatre companies and a host of other cultural institutions make Yekaterinburg a cultural hot spot. Also often called the capital of contemporary dance, Yekaterinburg has a number of famous contemporary dance companies residing within the city.

Football

FC Ural competes in the First Division as the top representative of Yekaterinburg's football clubs. Additionally, as one of Russia's Futsal centres, Yekaterinburg is also home to Futsal club Viz-Sinara, the 2009 Russian champion, UEFA Cup winner and Russian Cup winner. More than 30 football and Futsal tournaments are organised every year in the city. The city has 17 stadiums and these provide a perfect infrastructure for the 3,000 boys and girls belonging to the 12 sports schools.

Stadium

The FIFA World Cup™ Stadium Yekaterinburg is located on a 17.8 hectare site in the historic central part of the city. The stadium will be a refurbishment of the existing Uralmash Stadium, which is the home of Russian First Division team FC Ural. Yekaterinburg is a historic city with many heritage buildings, including the Uralmash Stadium itself. The stadium was built in 1957 in one of the oldest parts of Yekaterinburg.

FAN FEST

This site, located next to the Iset River, is the Historical Square, one of the main tourist attractions of Yekaterinburg. This downtown city park shall serve as our main Fan Fest area. It is possible to integrate the river into the Fan Fest concept at this location, which would create a fantastic setting for the football celebrations.
